Is Sushiro Halal? Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia Checked (2026)

sushiro halal Oct 20, 2026
Quick Answer: Sushiro is not halal in Japan. By our count of its official allergen table, 54 items use pork, and Sushiro makes no halal claim for its Japanese restaurants. In Malaysia, the official menu says "No Pork, No Lard", but JAKIM's public halal directory listed no Sushiro restaurant when we searched on 20 October 2026. In Indonesia, we found no BPJPH halal certificate for Sushiro's restaurants, although a December 2025 news report says its Grand Indonesia outlet offers halal soy sauce.

The answer depends on the country, because each country has its own Sushiro menu. Below is what you can check yourself in each country, and what to do with it.

Is Sushiro halal in Japan?

No. Sushiro's Japanese website does not describe any restaurant as halal, and the menu includes pork dishes alongside the fish.

The most useful document is Sushiro's official allergen table, published by Akindo Sushiro Co., Ltd. The English version we read is dated 7 October 2026. It covers the 28 allergens set by Japan's Food Labeling Act, and pork and gelatin are two of the columns. The table uses two marks:

  • ● means the item uses that ingredient.
  • ○ means the ingredient is shared or comes into contact with the item on the factory production line.

Here is what our count of that table shows (569 items listed):

  • 54 items use pork. That is 42 sushi plates and 12 side dishes.
  • 179 more items carry the ○ mark for pork, meaning pork is handled on the same factory line.
  • 336 items carry no pork mark of either kind.
  • 23 items use gelatin, including puddings, tiramisu, parfaits and several ramen. The table does not say what animal the gelatin comes from.

Some pork items are obvious, such as Grilled Pork Sushi, Pork Cutlet Sushi, Seared Char Siu Pork Sushi, Prosciutto, the Parma ham plates, the hamburg steak sushi and the meatball gunkan. Others are not. The table marks pork as an ingredient in Herring Roe Sushi, Fresh Salmon with Assorted Roe, several avocado rolls such as Pickled Salmon Avocado Rolls, and many of the ramen bowls, including the sea bream ramen and the chicken shoyu ramen. If you only remember one thing, check the pork column for every plate, not just the ones with meat in the name.

The table also carries Sushiro's own warning that kitchen preparation can cause unintentional cross-contact with allergens that are not listed.

What about mirin, sake and the sushi rice?

The allergen table covers allergens only. It does not list mirin, sake or other alcohol, so it cannot tell you whether the sushi rice, sauces or soups contain them. In the table, the row for plain sushi rice carries no allergen marks, but that says nothing about alcohol. Many sushi restaurants in Japan season rice or sauces with mirin or sake, so ask staff at the restaurant if this matters to you.

The table also does not say how beef or chicken was slaughtered. Since Sushiro makes no halal claim in Japan, treat the beef and chicken plates as not halal.

If you still want to eat there

Sushiro does not claim halal certification for its restaurants in Japan, so if you only eat at certified places, it does not fit. If you take a seafood-only approach, open the official allergen table on your phone before you order (Sushiro's Dotonbori restaurant in Osaka has its own version) and choose plates with no mark in the pork or gelatin columns. Plain items such as Fresh Salmon, Squid and Cucumber show no pork mark of either kind in the current table. Skip the ramen, the desserts with gelatin and anything with a pork ● mark.

Is Sushiro halal in Malaysia?

No Sushiro restaurant appears in JAKIM's public halal directory. When we searched the directory for "Sushiro" on 20 October 2026, the food premises results were empty.

What the directory does show is seven food items, mostly desserts and dessert components, such as matcha tiramisu cake, chocolate slice cake, matcha panna cotta mixture and mango sauce. They are listed under the brand name "Sushiro" (most as "Komugi / Sushiro") and made by Multiple Reward Sdn Bhd, with JAKIM certification valid until 31 October 2027. That certification covers those products. It does not make the restaurants halal-certified.

On its own menu, Sushiro Malaysia makes a narrower promise. The official Grand Menu, last updated on the Sushiro Malaysia site in June 2026, carries a "No Pork / No Lard" banner on both pages. The drinks shown on the Grand Menu are soft drinks, coffee and a drink bar, with no alcoholic drinks listed. The menu does not say where the beef and chicken come from, and it shows no halal logo or certifying body. We found no public statement from Sushiro Malaysia in the past 12 months on where its chicken and beef come from, whether mirin or cooking sake goes into its sauces and rice, or whether it plans to apply for halal certification. A search of JAKIM's directory on 20 October 2026 for the operating company, Sushiro Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., also returned no results.

"No pork, no lard" is not the same as halal. It does not cover how meat was slaughtered, whether seasonings contain alcohol, or how the kitchen is run. Whether that is enough is your decision. If you plan to eat there, ask the staff where the chicken and beef come from and whether the sauces contain mirin. If you need JAKIM certification, Sushiro is not on the list today.

Sushiro's Malaysian site lists three restaurants: Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, 1 Utama in Petaling Jaya, and Sunway Pyramid (Blue Atrium) in Bandar Sunway.

Is Sushiro halal in Indonesia?

We found no BPJPH halal certificate for Sushiro's restaurants in Indonesia. On 20 October 2026, BPJPH's public certificate search returned no results for "Sushiro" or "Indonesia Sushiro" as the business name. Sushiro's Indonesian site names its operator as PT Indonesia Sushiro Restaurants.

What recent news reports say: when Sushiro opened its tenth Indonesian outlet at Grand Indonesia in Jakarta in December 2025, Kumparan reported that the restaurant offers halal soy sauce and halal amadare (sweet soy sauce). Medcom reported the same month that Sushiro imports halal shoyu from Japan. Neither report names a certifying body for these sauces, and neither describes the restaurant itself as certified.

Sushiro's Indonesian site lists ten outlets, nine in Jakarta and one at Margo City in Depok. Before you go, ask staff which dishes contain mirin, and check for a halal certificate on display.

How does Sushiro compare with other conveyor-belt chains?

Kura Sushi, Hama Sushi and Kappa Sushi are separate companies with their own menus and suppliers, and we did not check them for this article. The same two checks work for any chain: read the pork and gelatin columns in the chain's official allergen table, and look the restaurant up in a certifying body's public list. The current official materials we checked do not answer this. The Japanese allergen table does not cover mirin, sake or other alcohol, and the Malaysian menu does not mention them. Ask staff at the restaurant before you order.

Apart from the obvious pork, ham, hamburg steak and meatball plates, the table marks pork in Herring Roe Sushi, Fresh Salmon with Assorted Roe, several avocado rolls and many of the ramen bowls. Check the pork column for every item.

What we could and could not verify

We read Sushiro's official allergen table for Japan (dated 7 October 2026), the official Grand Menu and outlet list on Sushiro Malaysia's site, Sushiro Indonesia's outlet list, JAKIM's public halal directory and BPJPH's public certificate search, all on 20 October 2026, plus news reports from December 2025. Our item counts come from that table and may shift as Sushiro updates it.

We could not verify from any current official source whether Sushiro's sushi rice, sauces or soups contain mirin or other alcohol in any country, so ask staff. We did not check whether each outlet is open today, so look at Sushiro's official site or social media in that country before you go. Halal status can change, so confirm at the restaurant, and tell us if something here is out of date.
