It is south-east of the centre, away from the tourist route, so plan the journey rather than assuming you can drop in between temples.

Closer to where you will actually be:

• JR Nara Station has a prayer space — the single most useful fixture in the city, because it is where most visitors arrive and leave
• Kai Shopping Mall (界) at Wakido-cho 12-1 has a prayer space
• Nara City Tourist Information Center at Sanjo-honmachi has one as well

One correction. The Nara Visitor Center & Inn (Sarusawa Inn) appears on halal listings as a prayer space. It shut for good at the end of March 2026, after the prefecture's review committee recommended demolition. Listings have not caught up. Do not plan around it.

Halal Wagyu, Minutes from the Deer Park

GYUMON Nara at Takama-cho 48, in the basement of the Morita Building, rates 4.9 across 1,116 reviews and is classified by Google as a halal restaurant. It serves halal wagyu ramen and gyukatsu — beef cutlet.

Gyumon is the brand that opened Japan's first halal wagyu yakiniku restaurant in 2007. It states that its ingredients, seasonings and cooking methods are all certified, with Malaysia Halal Corporation as the certifying body, and its branches have prayer rooms.

This is the strongest halal option in Nara and it is a short walk from Kintetsu Nara Station, which puts it inside the standard tourist loop rather than out at the edge of the city.

Ponte Rosso Halal & Veg at Konishi-cho 2 rates 4.1 across 208 and carries the halal classification. Italian, which is a rarer thing to find halal in Japan than curry.

Meccha Doner at Hashimoto-cho 28 rates 4.5 across 34, and Halal Turkish Kebab and Ice Cream at Hashimoto-cho 29 rates 4.1 across 52. Both sit on Sanjo-dori, the main approach street, so they are the practical choice between temples.

Ashura (あしゅーら) at Kawanokami Tsukinuke-cho 18-3 rates 4.1 across 73.

It does not hold halal certification, and it is a small open-fronted shop rather than a restaurant, so confirm the ingredients directly with the staff before buying. But for anyone who wants to eat something in Nara that is actually of Nara, mochi is the answer, and this is the shop.

Halal Ramen

Honolu (帆のる ぷれみあ 奈良三条) at Kamisanjo-cho 7, in the Inoue Building, rates 4.9 across 510 reviews and carries Google's halal classification. Honolu is the halal ramen chain you may already know from Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, and the Nara branch also runs wagyu and a vegan option. It is on Sanjo-dori, the main approach street from JR Nara Station toward the park.

Between this and GYUMON, Nara has two halal ramen options rated 4.9, both inside the walking route. That is better than most cities several times its size.
