Is Korean Food Halal? BBQ, Ramyeon, Kimchi and Where to Eat 2026
Quick Answer: Treat ordinary Korean restaurants as not halal. Pork is central to Korean cooking, beef and chicken are not halal-slaughtered unless the restaurant says so, and sauces such as gochujang and bulgogi marinade often contain alcohol. To eat Korean BBQ, fried chicken, bibimbap or tteokbokki, go to a restaurant that serves a halal version: in Seoul, that means Myeongdong, Hongdae or Itaewon. For instant noodles, buy packs that carry a halal mark and read the Korean allergen line for 돼지고기 (pork).
Korean food is built on a few base flavors: soy sauce, gochujang (red chili paste), doenjang (soybean paste), garlic, sesame oil and fermented seafood. Most of these are fine in themselves. The problems come from the meat, from the stocks, and from small amounts of rice wine or ethanol in sauces. This guide goes dish by dish, says what to look out for, and names places in Seoul where you can eat a halal version.
Is Korean food halal? The short version

| Kimchi | Fermented seafood is used; kimchi stews often contain pork | Kimchi served at halal restaurants |

| Bibimbap | Beef topping; gochujang | Halal Korean restaurants in Itaewon and Myeongdong |

| Snacks | Gelatin, lard, liquor flavors | Read the label for the words below |
Dish by dish: what to check and where to eat a halal version
Korean BBQ: samgyeopsal, galbi and bulgogi
What to watch for. Samgyeopsal is grilled pork belly, so it is out. Galbi (short ribs) and bulgogi (thin marinated beef) are beef, but at an ordinary restaurant the beef is not halal-slaughtered, and the marinade is usually made with soy sauce, sugar, fruit and a splash of rice wine (mirim or cheongju) to soften the meat. Most BBQ restaurants also grill pork on the same tables.

Where to eat it halal.
BUSANJIB KBBQ is a charcoal BBQ restaurant in the Busanjib alley of Myeongdong. The menu covers Hanwoo striploin (Korea's native beef), wagyu ribeye, marinated wagyu flank, lamb chops, and side dishes such as Hanwoo soybean paste stew, Hanwoo ramen and wagyu bulgogi bibimbap. Charcoal BBQ orders start at two servings. BSJ Studio, the company that runs Busanjib, presents it as a halal restaurant, and the restaurant page asks guests to contact the team for the current halal certificate. The page also says no alcohol is served here, and a prayer room is in the Busanjib seafood restaurant next door. It has more than 450 Google reviews. 1F to 2F, 11-8 Myeongdong 8-gil, Jung-gu, about 270 m from Myeongdong Station (Line 4).
BUSANJIB Hongdae brings Korean BBQ and Korean dishes to Hongdae, with LA galbi, Hanwoo striploin, tteokbokki, wagyu ramyeon and wagyu bulgogi rice bowls on its menu. BSJ Studio presents this branch as halal too, and the restaurant page says no alcohol is served. Prayer and wudu facilities are on site. 2F, 100-6 Eoulmadang-ro, Mapo-gu, about 370 m from Hongik University Station (Line 2).
EID Halal Korean Food also runs a BBQ branch in Hongdae, at 36-8 Wausan-ro 21-gil, Mapo-gu, about 500 m from Hongik University Station. EID describes itself on Instagram as a halal Korean restaurant. Ask whether alcohol is served.
Korean fried chicken
What to watch for. Korean fried chicken is double-fried and coated in sauces such as yangnyeom (sweet chili) or soy garlic. Mainstream chicken chains do not say their chicken is halal, and the same fryers handle other products. Unless the shop itself says it serves halal chicken, assume it does not.
Where to eat it halal.
BSJ CHICKEN & WOK in Myeongdong serves Korean fried chicken alongside Korean-Chinese dishes such as jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup). It is part of the same BSJ Studio group as Busanjib, which describes the restaurant as halal; ask the team if you want to see the current certificate. Prayer and wudu facilities are available. 1F to 2F, 7 Myeongdong 9-gil, Jung-gu, about 310 m from Euljiro 1-ga Station (Line 2) and 390 m from Myeongdong Station.
In Hongdae, BSJ CHICKEN is on the 3rd floor of the same building as BUSANJIB Hongdae. BSJ Studio presents it as halal as well, and the Busanjib page says you can order the chicken there and have it served at your table downstairs.
Kimchi
What to watch for. Standard napa cabbage kimchi is seasoned with jeotgal, which is salted and fermented anchovy or shrimp. Seafood is halal for most Muslims, and alcohol is not normally added to kimchi. The bigger risk is how kimchi is used: kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) and kimchi fried rice are commonly cooked with pork. A free side dish of kimchi at an ordinary restaurant is also made in a kitchen that handles pork.

For packaged kimchi, the Jongga brand (Daesang) says its Geochang factory has held halal certification since 2010. The page does not name the certifier, so check the specific pack for a halal mark.
Where to eat it halal. At a halal Korean restaurant, the kimchi side dish and any kimchi stew come out of the same halal kitchen as the rest of the meal, so that is the place to try kimchi jjigae.
Tteokbokki
What to watch for. Tteokbokki is chewy rice cakes in a sweet and spicy sauce, usually with fish cakes (eomuk). The rice cakes are rarely the problem. The sauce is built on gochujang, and many commercial gochujang pastes list 주정 (ethanol) among the ingredients to keep the paste stable. Street stalls also add stock powders and fish cakes whose labels you cannot see.

Daesang presented its Mamasuka gochujang paste as a halal sauce for overseas buyers at a Bangkok food trade show in June 2026, so halal gochujang exists. It is not what a street stall in Seoul will be using.
Where to eat it halal. BUSANJIB Hongdae lists tteokbokki on its menu.
Bibimbap and Korean home cooking
What to watch for. Bibimbap is rice topped with vegetables, a fried egg and usually seasoned beef, mixed with gochujang. Ordering it without meat removes the beef, but the gochujang and any stock in the accompanying soup remain. The same applies to japchae (glass noodles stir-fried with beef) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew, often made with beef or pork stock).

EID Halal Korean Food in Itaewon is a Korean restaurant on the lane that leads up to the Seoul Central Mosque. Recent diner reviews mention bulgogi, bibimbap and fried chicken. Its Instagram profile describes it as a halal Korean restaurant and lists opening hours of 11:30-21:00 every day, with last orders at 20:30. Ask whether alcohol is served. 15 Usadan-ro 10-gil, Yongsan-gu, about 230 m from Itaewon Station (Line 6).

Jipbap Gim Seonsaeng (집밥 김선생, "Home Cooked Meal Gim Seonsaeng") is a Korean home cooking restaurant in Itaewon. Its Instagram profile describes the food as halal Korean cooking and lists opening hours of 11:30-21:40, Monday to Saturday. The profile points to Star Catering for orders, which sells halal lunch boxes with bulgogi, stir-fried squid and samgyetang (chicken ginseng soup). Ask whether alcohol is served. 3 Noksapyeong-daero 32-gil, Yongsan-gu, about 250 m from Noksapyeong Station (Line 6).
BUSANJIB KBBQ in Myeongdong also serves wagyu bulgogi bibimbap.
Instant ramyeon: Shin Ramyun and Buldak
What to watch for. Korean instant noodles are easy to get wrong, because the noodles look harmless and the meat is in the seasoning powder. The packs sold in Korea are made for the Korean market, and the versions exported to Malaysia, Indonesia or the Gulf can have different recipes and certification.

- Nongshim Shin Ramyun Cup: Nongshim's own product information page lists beef in the allergen line and says the product is made in a facility that also handles pork.
- Nongshim Shin Ramyun Big Bowl (큰사발면): the allergen line on Nongshim's page lists both pork and beef.
- Samyang Buldak: Samyang's Buldak site says Samyang identifies KMF halal certification for Buldak Ramen in its official product information, but warns that this does not extend automatically to every flavor, format or market version. Look for the green KMF HALAL mark on the pack itself before you buy.
Where to eat it halal. BUSANJIB Hongdae serves wagyu ramyeon and BUSANJIB KBBQ serves Hanwoo ramen.
Snacks and convenience store food
Korean convenience stores (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, Emart24) are useful for water, fruit, milk and plain snacks. For anything else, read the label. Korean labels list common allergens in a separate box, and pork (돼지고기) and beef (쇠고기) are on that list, which makes pork easy to spot even if you cannot read the full ingredient list. Gelatin and liquor flavors are not on the allergen list, so check the ingredient list for them.
Triangle kimbap and ready meals often contain ham, pork cutlet or bulgogi beef, so skip them unless the pack carries a halal mark.
How to read a Korean food label
| Korean | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 돼지고기 / 돼지 | pork / pig | Avoid |
| 돈지, 라드 | pork fat, lard | Avoid |
| 젤라틴 | gelatin | Avoid unless the source is stated as halal or fish |
| 쇠고기, 소고기 | beef | Avoid unless the pack carries a halal mark |
| 닭고기 | chicken | Avoid unless the pack carries a halal mark |
| 주정 | ethanol | Avoid if you avoid added alcohol |
| 맛술, 미림, 청주 | cooking rice wine | Avoid |
| 럼, 양주 | rum, liquor | Avoid |
| 할랄 | halal | Look for the certifier's name or logo next to it |
A tip that saves time: take a photo of the label and use your phone's translation app on the 원재료명 (ingredients) and 알레르기 (allergens) lines only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Korean BBQ halal?
Not at an ordinary Korean BBQ restaurant. Pork is the most common meat, beef is not halal-slaughtered, and marinades usually contain rice wine. In Seoul, BUSANJIB KBBQ in Myeongdong and BUSANJIB Hongdae serve halal Korean BBQ, and their operator says neither serves alcohol.
Is kimchi halal?
Kimchi is made from vegetables seasoned with chili, garlic and fermented seafood, and alcohol is not normally added. Most Muslims eat it. The risk is in dishes made with kimchi, such as kimchi stew, which is commonly cooked with pork, and in side dishes prepared in kitchens that handle pork.
Is Shin Ramyun halal in Korea?
Treat the regular Shin Ramyun in Korean shops as not halal. Nongshim's own product pages list beef in the cup version and both pork and beef in the Big Bowl version. Buy a pack that carries a halal mark instead.
Is Buldak ramen halal?
Samyang says Buldak Ramen holds KMF halal certification, but it also says this does not cover every flavor, format or market version. Check the pack for the KMF HALAL mark before you buy.
Is there halal Korean food in Korea outside Seoul?
There is some, but less. In Busan and Jeju, most halal restaurants serve South Asian, Turkish or Indonesian food. Plan to eat Korean BBQ and Korean fried chicken in Seoul.
What we could and could not verify
We read each product's details on the manufacturer's own website on 19 October 2026. Recipes and allergen lines change, and the packs sold in Korea differ from the export versions, so read the pack in your hand. Korea has no public register of certified halal restaurants, because KMF does not publish its list. The restaurants in this guide describe their food as halal on their own website or Instagram, so we describe each one in those terms. If certification matters to you, ask the restaurant to show its current certificate. Only BUSANJIB KBBQ and BUSANJIB Hongdae state that they serve no alcohol, so ask at the others. Every restaurant in this guide was open on Google Maps or Kakao Map in October 2026. Menus, prices and hours change, so check the restaurant's own page before you go. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.
